I just got back from the Aerosmith concert at the Tacoma dome, and it was amazing. This was my 5th time Kind of like a good bottle of wine. I still remember the “Rocks” tour in the Seattle King-dome back in 1976 when Jeff Beck and Rick Derringer were on the bill. The band has come a long way since then. They called this tour “Rockin’ The Joint 2005/06, and man they sure did! I am tired, shnockered, and nursing a headache, but I am feeling alive at the same time from the awesome music. Man!
I went with a buddy, Todd Osborne. We left from Olympia early, around 4:45 and missed all the traffic. We found a FREE parking spot about 2 blocks away from the $20 pay spots since we were early. We had to walk about 5 blocks one way, up to Pacific, to find a cocktail, but my 2 long island ice teas made it worth the trek. We snuck in the back door of the show with my friends handy-cap sticker. No waiting. We did not like our nose bleed seats, and moved just behind the mixer to the best seats in the house without getting asked to leave! I was able to grab my traditional key-chain and collectable band pins beforehand and beat the rush.

Lenny Kravitz played first. He had his usual sexy female drummer and the band rocked with plenty of hits. Their amps were twice the size of Aerosmith, but did not come close to matching the sound. Lenny played about 1 hour and fifteen minutes, Some of the highlights were “American Woman”, “Are you going to go my way”, “Fly away”, and “Let love rules”. He was pretty good. Better than I expected actually. His stage props were laid back compared to the head-liner. He did not blow away, or steal any thunder from our boys from Boston, but seemed extremely convincing.
Aerosmith took the stage at 10pm. They rocked solid for about an hour and 45 minutes. Steven Tyler had his trademark scarf’s wrapped around his mike stand, with some gems and glitter on the bottom of the bass. They opened with a Beatles song “Helter Skelter”. There was only 5 days left on this leg of the tour, so they rocked hard and had rehearsed well. The light show was wicked, They played most the songs you expect. “Walk this way” was like second, and “Sweet Emotion”, “Dream On”, “Back in the saddle”, “Toys in the attic”, “Train Kept a rollin”, “Baby Please don’t go”, “no more no more” which they mentioned was recorded in 1975 for the “Toys in the attic” album, which came out 31 years ago when I was in the 8th grade. I find that mind boggling in itself.
There was lot of 80s stuff from “permanent vacation”, “Get a Grip” and “pumped” cd’s. They had the screen behind them, very high tech, and a ramp that went all the way out in the audience. They were electric and all over the place. They wandered out the ramp whenever they felt like and were absolutely mind blowing. There was funny spot in the show where Steven Tyler changed the words on “Janies got a gun” to “Cheney’s GOT A GUN!”. That was humorous and news timely, and of course dedicated to our poor excuse for a vice president. Late night though.Traffic sucked, and I did not get home until about 1am. It was worth it though, because I was due for a decent rocking. They really came through for me too! I would recommend this live act with two thumbs up. Rock and roll medicine for sure.
The band played arenas in major North American markets, from October 30, 2005 to March 2, 2006. Lenny Kravitz opened.

Simon & Garfunkel Tour Hit Seattle Washington on Saturday, November 1st at The Key arena. Professor Turnbow was on board for a full review!
Simon & Garfunkel opened the “Old Friends” concert to a wildly appreciative audience. Surprise special guests the Everly Brothers were introduced mid-way and sang three of their classic hits before Simon & Garfunkel returned to the stage to sing “Bye Bye Love” with them.
Here a brief overview of the show Saturday! It was about the 9th stop on an a 30 plus date tour through December. They played Denver before it, and were moving on to Portland next. I bought a collectable poster on thick cardboard as my souvenir. There was no pins or necklaces. Just shirts, cd’s, and programs. My poster is wicked. I even sacrificed my ticket to display with it. It looks like this!
I left at about 5 minutes to 6pm I had smooth waters until about the Tacoma Mall. Half hour back up. Coming into the center was a good 15 minute back-up. Total travel time was a whopping 90 minutes. My usual spot was taken but there was a pay lot with only 5 cars in it only 3 blocks from the show, right across the street from the usual spot! One credit card swipe on the visa and it only costs $5.00. Things were looking my way.
In the door at 8pm. They did not start until 8:30. Opening number was an instrumental “America” with a ten minute film. Too dark to see the band. Then they were there under the lights with an acoustic only to sing “Old Friends”. The band had legendary Jim Keltner on drums (Neil Young, CSNY, Travelling Willbury’s). Two keyboards, two Guitars, bass, two drums, very full).
Big bonus came 20 minutes in when THE EVERLY BROTHERS came out and sand about 6 of their biggest hits like “Wake Up Little Suzie”, “Dreams”, and “Let It Be Me”. Rejoined by Simon and Garfunkle for a blasting version of “Bye Bye Love”. This was am unexpected and cool bonus. Really cool! (But too short!)
The show ran for 2 and a half hours and was over at 11 pm. Their first official last song was “Bridge over Troubled Water”. The firsts of 4 big encores was “Cecilia”, then “The Boxer” and finally “Feeling Groovy” the 59th street bridge song. They had a second film moment in the show where they played clips from “The Graduate” and hammered out a rousing rendition of “Mrs. Robinson”.
My two bests moments were when Paul sang my favourite Simon and Garfunkle tune, after I was all but certain he would not and it was to obscure. He explained that Artie fly out to film a movie in Mexico called “Catch 22″, way back in the year of 1969. He was left home all alone and felt like he was “The Only Living Boy In New York”. Here are the lyrics. It is an obscure one, but allays my favourite.

06-13-2002″The Eagles” is one of those Super Groups, that all song writers love to analyze and emulate. The combination of talent in that band is unbelievable, with the force of Don Henly, Glenn Fry, Joe Walsh, and yes even the bass man Timothy B. Schmidt. They compose slices of life, that the whole world can relate to. We are lucky that “Hell Finally Froze Over” in 1994, and the boys of summer were reunited to play music for the first time in some 14 years. If you get the opportunity to go to an Eagles Live Concert, you best better do it, just in case lightening refuses to strike again!
This reviewer was lucky enough to see the legendary band at the Tacoma Dome in Washington State, on November 3, 1994. Everything was $85 that night. The concert tickets, as well as the “Ramada Hotel” right next door that included FREE parking for my date as well as myself that night. Great cocktail lounge with the famous Electric Ice Tea to party at before and after the show, before retiring to your room…… So convenient! But that is another story. My job tonight is to review the most recent “Eagles 2002 Tour”.

This one was in Oregon State, city of Portland at “The Rose Garden” where the “Portland Trailblazers” play Pro basketball. The show took place on June 13th 2002, about a two hour drive on beautiful Interstate Five Southbound, coming from home town of Olympia Washington. This was a three hour plus romp with a 20 minute break in the middle. A beautiful day, the sun was out and everything was glorious!
We arrived, parked, and entered the venue. The band came on and announced they were thrilled to be out on tour, and then proceeded to play almost all of their best hits, and some enticing solo gems as well. It’s amazing that Joe Walsh was able to cover songs the played with one of his early groups “James Gang” from the early seventies, and both Glenn Fry and Don Henly had allot of success in the Eighties when MTV was all the rage, they both were releasing relevant music, which they featured on tour this particular evening in Oregon.

This concert rocked! The songs all speck for themselves and remain classics to this day. Even country superstar Garth Brooks has said “The Eagles” were one of the most influential bands in the development of his musical style! High praise from a guy who has sold about the same amount of albums in his own right. Good song writing makes a good band, and tonight was no exception. I rate this one with a big fat “A”. I will try to catch them again, if we as a human race are lucky enough to have such a rare and outstanding moment to occur again! THUMBS UP…….. WAY UP!!!!!!!!!!

(Yes, this is the Actual ticket for the Actual CSNY show in 2000! Since the she show was rescheduled, it is printed for the wrong day! The red ink is my lame attempt to get the date right!)
Never Mind that this concert was supposed to happen on Friday March 15th, 2002. Neil Young, the man who asked to regroup for a second CSNY tour in the last thirty some years, got the flu. We all know that it is next to impossible to perform when we are sick, so the show was “Rescheduled” for Sunday, 4/28/02. This worked out perfect or is reviewer, Mr. E.T., as it was a non-work night, and therefore easier to get away without a lot of pre-scheduled run-around! It was very convenient!
So, Reverend Lee and his wife, Lori Phillips, met me at “The Old Spaghetti Factory” in down-town Tacoma just before the show, for some delicious pasta, bread and spamonie ice cream, and even a cocktail. We were only minutes away from the Tacoma Dome where the legendary rockers, I often refer to as a law firm, (Get it? C.S.N.Y and Associates), were to perform in just a couple of hours! How exciting.
Parking was a blast, and we even skipped the customary Ramada Inn cocktail before the show, which is usually a long island ice tea. We had our cocktails at the restaurant, and were ready for some rock and roll, sensitive harmony, fantastic original songs, and a little legendary magic!
Our seats were fantastic. They cost about $92 which is kind of high, but this event only comes around an average of once per decade, so it was worth the price to us. Believe me. Neil Young is always good. I have been fortunate to see him now 6 times, including a rousing show with family members and historic players in Colorado “Red Rocks Amphitheatre” in September of 2000, but that is another story for another time! I was also lucky enough to catch CSN without Neil on the “Daylight Again” tour in Seattle 12/07/82 at The Key Arena, then named “The Seattle Coliseum”. That also is another story for another time! They were great though, I would like to mention, EVERY time I have been blessed enough to see them! So there you have it!
The show kicked off just ten short minutes late of the show time @ 8:10 pm. sharp! Believe it or not, they opened up with THE SAME SONG they did on the CSNY2K Tour I saw just two short years earlier on 02/02/2000, and the was the fitting “Carry On”. Great harmony on that one, and it basically said the band was continuing its message of peace and love and hippie madness from the sixties and earl seventies. “Carry on……. Love is coming…… Love is coming to us all”. Boy were they right! Just for starters, their backup band was none other than the famous “Booker T. and The M.G’s” featuring the original drummer, Legendary Bass Player Donald “Duck” Dunn, and Keyboard whiz Booker T. Jones himself. You may remember this was also the nucleolus of the “Blues Brothers” band led by Paul Shaffer of Dave Letterman fame, and immortalized in two classic movies directed by John Landis that starred Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi (Who’s role was replaced by a new character in the 2nd film played by John Goodman). This is some history for a band, and the only notable absent players tonight was the fabulous sax-man (who was unavailable touring with James Taylor), and guitarist Steve Cropper who was not needed in a band that all ready has FOUR lead guitar players, two of which can double on keyboards! (That would be Graham Nash, and Neil Young).
The band proceeded to put on a show that consist of two sets, with a twenty minute break, consisting of OVER THREE LONG HARD HOURS OF MUSIC)! Here is how the set went down!

It was a lot of music, they wanted us to get our moneys worth, which came to a little more than $30 per hour, and in my opinion worth every minute of it. Having seen them twice in the last two years, it was interesting to note that each time they did approximately 30 tunes, and only did about 10 of them twice between the two tours, Some of their classics MUST be played at every show, or it just is not an authentic CSNY Show. Last tour they were promoting a new album called “Looking Forward” and therefore played about half of its tracks, and this time they did not play a single one of those cuts, to my dismay. That was a GREAT RECORD. They had to make the cuts somewhere though. they have so many great songs out, they cannot do them all………UNFORTUNATELY!
Thumbs up from this reviewer on a great show. Neal Young did make a snide remark about the way the Tacoma Dome echoed, and he also mentioned this was the 2nd to the last stop on the tour, which would do its final show in Oregon at “The Rose Garden” in Portland. This venue is owned by our own Paul Allen, who also happens to own the “Seattle Seahawks” football team, “Portland Trailblazers” basketball team, and is the founder of the EMP museum in Seattle!
Bottom line! This tour ROCKED and was well worth the wait. The song writing talents of these four individuals (David Crosby, Steven Stills, Graham Nash, and Neil Young) is astounding. Together they make music magic! I only hope they choose to tour again…… and again……. and again!!!!!!!!!!!!

“The Guess Who” came to our humble town of Seattle on 11/04/01, playing at “The Key Arena”. This was the ORIGINAL REUNION with the whole group intact!
Not some cover band with only one original member, no, no, but the original guys, right down to singer/songwriter Burton Cummings, and Rock legend guitarist Randy Bachman! It was a magical night of impressive nostalgia and great sound. Professor Turnbow, (E.T.) was on hand to witness this triumph in the bitter-sweet reunion of an artistic and original “70′s Super-group from Canada! The opening act was a head-liner as well!
Yes, it was British rocker Joe Cocker who opened the show! “This is the last night of our tour” he bellowed, “and we are going to play extra special for you”. With that he began the night with the classic “Feelin’ All right” which woke this Seattle crowd up from the first chord to the final crescendo! They played all the hits, and then some including “You are So Beautiful”, “The Letter”, “Unchain My Heart” and the blistering Beatles cover “High With a Little Help From My Friends”, which frankly kicked ass!
He performed for good hour and fifteen minutes which included 2 rousing encores. It was tremendous, and yes, Joe, who was a veteran Woodstock performer, continues to rock with his spazzmatic dance and jumping vocal style that John Belushi loved to imitate in the early years of Saturday Night Live! After a fifteen minute pause, “The Guess Who”, hit the stage at precisely 9:20pm. They were hot, and poised, and sounded absolutely fantastic! They took the audience in the palm of their hands, and lead us down a road of classic rock nostalgia. Burton Cummings voice was in perfect pitch, and he sang like a kid half his age, rocking he coliseum with intensity!

The encore was fitting, what with the 911 Tragedy in New York just weeks earlier, they sent a message of hope and peace. Randy Bachman has never sounded better on guitar, His BTO classics rocked hard, the acoustic set was tremendous, and overall the show was incredible! There was one particular special Seattle moment when the singer, Burton Cummings, mentioned that they had recorded their ONLY live album locally in town at “The Paramount”, on Fourth and Pine, in 1972. It was only fitting to end the tour here in the Emerald City.
They gave it “all they got”……………….AND THEN SOME! This reviewer LOVED this show, and could make no changes to its overwhelming, professional punch! Be cool, Keep on singing!

Elton and Billy Rocked!
Tacoma Dome 1/24/2001 “Face To Face Tour”

I Went to the Elton John and Billie Joel “Face To Face” tour at the Tacoma dome yesterday! Let’s just say that it was not disappointing! I had a ton of fun, with my good and faithful Karaoke co worker Joel. I was touched by the way they sang each others music and hid their egos behind their amps! They opened up with “Your Song” and “Just the way you are” as a DUO, which totally was cool seeing them perform together without the band. Then, after 2 full sets as a single and their own bands behind them, They blew everyone away, when at the encore of a long 3 plus hour night, They came back together to perform again as a twosome. This time they played 11 songs with BOTH BACK UP BANDS kicking it out. First song was Beethoven “Ode to Joy” of all things, followed by 2 Beatles songs, both written by John Lennon. (Come Together, and A Hard days Night). I did not expect that! Finally the band split again, and the last song of the night was “Piano Man” and they alternated singing the lead every other verse pretty much for the entire encore set! It was GREAT! Basically they jammed for some 4 hours with little break! Not even enough time to drain the lizard or get another “Electric Ice Tea”. My thumb is way up, which is the spirit the concert left me with! I am sure that the Portland show must have sold out big time, but tickets go for $93.00 and way up, no thanks to ticket master.

I really enjoyed seeing such hot studio back up players
together in the final ensemble bonus encores done
together. We had Nigel Olsen on the drums AND Liberty
Devito as well, sort of the best of the best as you will.
The song writing was incredible, with Elton penning
18 tracks to Billys 15. Plus 4 Covers to round it off.
They both parked their egos at the door and paid
tribute to each other with one cover for each.
They also sang back and fourth through the duo sections
one verse each, which I had never seen before. To make it
even cooler, they had Elton's image on the screen above
Billy, and Billy's image on the screen above Elton!
Talk about an even steven match up. They sort of paid
tribute to each other that night, and they did it
"FACE TO FACE", which incidentally was the name of
the tour! Now how hip is that? Steinway grand pianos
parked next to each cranking out rockin' classic rock
classics for an unbelievable performance spectacle.
My score would have to be a "10". I would highly
recommend you to go see
this one if the opportunity presents itself!

My Encounter with Las Vegas and Paul McCartney! 06-10-2011

So first off let Me thanks our good friends Rene and Carole Emondt for generously giving Us two great tickets to see the Legend Paul McCartney. We were at another concert in Seattle one drizzly evening on April 23, 2011 to see Stevie Nicks and Rod Stewart perform over at The Key Arena. They made this generous offer during a Classic Rock Dance-athon at a bar across the street from the show. all they really said was “Make it happen, get yourself there to Las Vegas and the tickets are Yours)! So what could we say to that? The tickets were about $200 apiece!
So Thanks again have to also out go to My Stop Mom Vikki Turnbow, who purchased our plane tickets and Hotel rooms as a special Birthday present for Me that year! This was a generous and well appreciated move that actually made the trip possible! This entire 4 day vacation ended up only costing Me just under $200 and most of that was for food, very few souvenirs, parking and and airport shuttle fees! But the entire thing added up was more like $1150!

WE left Olympia for Sea Tac Airport @ 2:15. we were on the plane and off by 4pm. WE flew to Long Beach and had to stay overnight because we missed the connecting flight. They actually comped Us a room, and shuttle to the plane in the morning, but it cost Us a day in Vegas! WE ended up arriving in Las Vegas on the morning of the show at 8:40am.

We had to get settled in Our Hotel after a Shuttle Bus took Us there for $24 round trip and a few dollars in tips. WE were just blocks away from the MGM Grand because we planned it that way! It was the day of the show so we had to get right down to business!

The concert opened with a really cool slide show of all kinds of Images from Paul’s brilliant career. There was a DJ in a white Tux playing obscure Re-Mixes of the classic, as We watched the enormous screen roll through the classic poses. It was sweet! After about a half hour of this, just past 8pm Paul strolled out on stage and we all jumped to our feet at Attention! He was wearing a black sports coat and looking highly fashionable! He opened with “Magical Mystery Tour” which was fine by Me! The show included a few surprises for Me, perhaps when He played “1985″, and “Juniors Farm” 2 old Wings classics. I did not expect this! Another delight for me was when He played the ukulele on “Everybody’s Gonna’ Dance Tonight”. The drummer Abe, was doing the silly dances, including the macarena and putting on a real show in the back during this piece. He did not play that song when He saw him the last time in 2005!
Paul had played a Private Corporate party just the night before right here in this very venue. So He had back to back shows and brought in Millions of Buckaroos! The set lists were similar, with just a few song changes here and there between the evenings. The show was a good 3 hours plus the slide show! Killer! That set list is posted at the bottom of this Review!
What was a VERY COOL moment at The Paul McCartney “Up and Coming Tour 2011″ in Las Vegas Nevada June 10, 2011? There was “Beatles Royalty” in the house! In about the third row, as you will see in this clip that Tributes the great John Lennon, look closely and you will see Yoko Ono and Her son Sean Lennon, and Olivia Harrison (George’s widow) , and Her son Dhanni.
At the end of the show and everyone was exciting, the entire mob started singing “Hey Jude” at the top of their lungs and they pushed and shoved, herded just like cattle out of the venue and back into the Hotel. It was surreal, and yes, I had to join in on the fun! Of course! Paul has millions of loyal fans! Or is it Billions perhaps?

THE HOTEL in Las Vegas was Not great. The remote did not work. There was a burned out light in the bathroom. There was no coffee in the room. It was hot and humid and the air conditioner was not working at optimum levels.
I would have been satisfied with the overall price if we stuck to the Itinerary and did not miss a night in Vegas. We had to change our plans and get up early and pray for a standby flight! We could have missed the Paul McCartney show! (But we did not thankfully)!
We flew flight 293 from Seatac to Long beach on Thursday June 09, 2011. Our flight was delayed due to “Mechanical Problems” by almost 2 hours. The problem is that because of the delay we missed out connecting flight to Las Vegas. WE had to stay in Long Beach and miss an entire day of Vegas, as well as lose the Hotel reservation we had in Vegas. Had we flown on the day of The McCartney show we would have had to MISS the concert because of this mis-step.
We paid close top a grand for the tickets, airfare, and hotels. I would have been pissed if we missed the show, but lucky for Us we planned to arrive one night early. We did appreciate the comped hotel at Holiday Inn which turned our to be much much nicer than our Vegas flat. So thanks for that. But missing a night in Vegas was traumatic and unfair to us. We had such a short stay, this inconvenience was not good. All said, we did make the show and had a great time. But there should be an alternative travel plan like stitching to another airline just for that portion of the flight so we can arrive on the right day in accordance to our paid reservation and prior plans to hook up for dinner with the friends that generously GAVE us the tickets! That did not happen because we were in Californian and not Nevada! The full confirmation number for the trip was 964E5880215……
After the incredible vacation we arrived back at Seatac Airport in Seattle at 9:10 pm putting Us at Home in Olympia By Midnight!

Paul McCartney Live in Las Vegas June 10, 2011 MGM Grand
Paul McCartney and his current touring live band made a tour stop at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas , Nevada on June 10, 2011 as part of his Up And Coming tour. The crowd consisted of every age demographic from children to great-grandparents. McCartney’s appeal is universal as his music spans 4 decades with hits all along the way.
This stop’s timing made for a lot of interesting possibilities on this night as The Beatles Love show in Las Vegas is celebrating its 5th anniversary of performances. McCartney recently released re-mastered versions of his McCartney and McCartney II albums. Right before the show started there was a buzz in the crowd near the stage and everyone near the front stood and started taking pictures and cheering. Yoko Ono, Sean Lennon, Olivia Harrison, George Martin and Giles Martin had arrived and taken their seats to enjoy this stop on Paul McCartney’ tour. It added a nice level of excitement to know that John Lennon’s Son and Widow were in the audience along with the other members of The Beatles family. They were all in town to attend the Anniversary of The Beatles – Love show. The only member of the living Beatles family that was missing was Ringo.
The show was scheduled to start a 7:30 PM and Paul and his band took the stage promptly at 8:00. It was a fashionably late start to give the arena time to fill to capacity. Paul walked on stage wearing his Hofner bass guitar and a cool looking jacket. He started off the show with a rocking rendition of The Beatles song Magical Mystery Tour. The band then quickly launched into the Wings hit Junior’s Farm followed by All My Loving and Jet. It was a great high energy way to kick off the show.The stage was flanked by two large projection screens with a wide projection screen that stretched the width of the stage behind the stage as well. The screen behind the band flashed images, graphics and video clips that went along with the songs. The graphics to Jet were particularly nice with jet airplanes spelling out the word “Jet” in contrails as the song played.McCartney paused at this point to thank the audience for coming and to give a shout out to Las Vegas jokingly calling it “Lost Wages”. He said he was going to take a second to drink it all in and crossed his arms on his bass and let the cheers and adulation of the crowd flow over him.
He then launched into Got To Get You Into My Life followed by Sing The Changes which is an excellent track from The Fireman project.The crowd’s energy was really picking up and Paul McCartney paused to take off his jacket and Hofner bass. He commented “Well, that’s the major wardrobe change for the evening barring a malfunction.” Paul, now dressed in a blue button up shirt with white collar, suspenders and black trousers strapped on a Gibson Les Paul and played the rocking Let Me Roll It. I thought that was an interesting choice as John Lennon hated that song and Yoko was in the audience but it still rocked hard and the band played it well.
At the end of Let Me Roll It McCartney and the band launched into the Jimi Hendrix riff from Foxy Lady and Paul did some fiery lead guitar work. Paul’s guitar skills are excellent and he really fired off some nice leads on this song. Paul then said “That was a tribute to the great Jimi Hendrix” and he told the story of meeting Hendrix in England. Paul told how he had gone to see Jimi Hendrix play two days after the release of the Sgt. Pepper’s album and Hendrix covered the song Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band at the show. McCartney told how Jimi had done some heavy whammy-bar tricks during the song and had knocked his Stratocaster wildly out of tune. Hendrix then called out to Eric Clapton who was in the audience as well and asked Eric to come up and tune his guitar. McCartney jokingly said that Clapton was trying to hide out in the audience! It was a great story for those of us that love the guitar.

McCartney then moved to the grand piano and played The Long And Winding Road followed by the Wings song Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five which was really excellent. He then sang Let ‘Em In followed by the excellent Maybe I’m Amazed from the album McCartney. Paul sang Maybe I’m Amazed especially well singing beautifully in tune with some excellent vocal improvisations.
The only thing revealing Paul’s age (68) was his voice being a little screechy on some of the falsetto notes but even then the man pours melody when he sings anything. I noticed that the light show pretty much stopped during this song and at the end of it McCartney announced that the song wasn’t scheduled to be played and he sprung it on the road crew. He said it was funny to see the surprise on their faces when the band launched into Maybe I’m Amazed. It was definitely a high point in the show.
Paul then strapped on an acoustic guitar and played I’m Looking Through You followed by a beautiful version of And I Love Her. He then talked about following the civil rights movement of the ‘60’s in the news while living in England and introduced the song Blackbird as a commentary on the civil rights movement. The lyrics of Blackbird are extremely relevant to the civil rights movement. Again, Paul’s guitar playing was perfection.Paul then talked about telling those that you care about that you love and care about them before it becomes too late. He said “you just never know when you’ll see them again” and he introduced the song If You Were HereToday which he said he wrote about his good friend John Lennon. He shouted “Let’s hear it for John!” and the crowd stood and cheered for the great John Lennon. McCartney said the song was written from the point of view of sitting and having a conversation with John. There were some tears in the audience at this point. If you’ve ever wondered if Yoko had heard this beautiful song written for John Lennon you can rest assured she has heard it now.
Paul then strapped on a mandolin and played his recent hit Dance Tonight whilst drummer Abe Laboriel Jr. did some sweet dance moves behind Macca including a bit of the Macarena. McCartney then played Mrs. Vandebilt with the crowd singing the “Hey-Ho’s” at the top of their lungs. Paul then did a very excellent rendition of Eleanor Rigby with Paul Wickens playing all the string parts on the keyboard while Laboriel and guitarist Rusty Anderson sang backing vocals. The lighting was really cool during Eleanor Rigby with Anderson and Laboriel standing in shadows during the verses and stepping into the light to sing the chorus.
Paul was handed a Ukulele’ and proceeded to talk about the late great George Harrison. The crowd stood and roared their approval and voiced their love for the great George Harrison. Paul told how George was a great Ukulele’ player and had given Paul the Gibson Ukulele’ he was currently playing. He told how he visited George one evening and told him “I learned how to play one of your songs on the Ukulele’”. Paul then proceeded to play the Harrison classic song Something on the Ukulele’ with the band joining in for a lush and spectacular finish to the song. While the band played some excellent images of George and Paul together were put on the screen behind the stage bringing back memories of George’s vibrancy an youth.McCartney returned to his Hofner bass and the band played Band On The Run. Then McCartney asked the crowd to sing along with Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da commenting about how the crowd the other night stopped singing when the band stopped playing. The crowd sang along at the top of their lungs and as the camera panned the crowd and images were displayed on screen you could see the joy in the audience. The crowd really was enjoying this night! One of the cutest moments was when the camera zoomed in on a Father holding his young child who was playing with a Paul McCartney doll. When the young man saw himself on screen his face lit up with joy.
The band immediately launched into Back In The USSR and nailed it.Macca then strapped on a sunburst Les Paul and played I’ve Got A Feeling with a sweet improvisational jam at the end with McCartney playing a wicked guitar solo. Paul then switched to an Epiphone Casino guitar which he said was the same guitar played on theBeatles album. Paul commented “You may have noticed that we like to switch guitars a lot. That’s because we like to show off! Just kidding.” The band played Paperback Writer to great applause. Paul McCartney – A Day In The Life/Give Peace A Chance – MGM Grand Garden Arena Las Vegas 2011
Paul donned the Hofner bass and said it was a special night with special guests in the audience. He then introduced Yoko Ono, Sean Lennon, Olivia Harrison and the Martin’s in the audience and put them up on the big screen. The crowd roared their approval. Paul then played the beautiful Lennon/McCartney song A Day In The Life. Paul stopped singing it after the middle section and went into the Lennon song Give Peace A Chance with the crowd singing along at the top of their lungs. It’s a message that’s still relevant today and Yoko looked quite pleased as she stood and sang along. I’m sure she was happy that McCartney was up there spreading the message on this night.
Paul then went back to the grand piano and played Let It Be. Then Paul pulled out all the stops and played the hard rocking Live And Let Die with some extremely awesome pyrotechnics and explosions. Live And Let Die was definitely a high point for the stage production. It was a bit awkward being placed so close to Give Peace A Chance and Let It Be. Paul ended the main set playing an upright piano painted with a psychedelic design and performed the song Hey Jude.
The crowd cheered for an encore and McCartney and the band delivered Day Tripper and Get Back with Paul playing the Hofner bass. The band left the stage again and the crowd roared for more.For the 2nd encore McCartney came onstage with an acoustic guitar and played the Beatles classic Yesterday. He then strapped the Hofner bass back on and stepped it up big time by playing the song Helter Skelter with McCartney again nailing the vocal parts.
To close the show Paul McCartney strapped on his Gibson Les Paul and informed the crowd it was time to go. He then launched into Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise) followed by The End from the album Abbey Road. The End featured some flaming guitar duels between McCartney and guitarists Rusty Anderson and Brian Ray. It was a fantastic one-two punch to close the show.
McCartney and his band were in fine form this night in Las Vegas. It was really a fantastic show although I’m surprised Paul didn’t play the song Coming Up from McCartney II with it being re-released and the tour being named after that song. Still, I feel very luck to have seen this show and the great Paul McCartney performing live. You never know when these guys are going to be gone so if you get a chance to catch Paul McCartney performing live, don’t miss it!

Michael Moore. Well, he’s a lovely man. Lovely. I’m not against him. But he is to an optimist’s attitude what salt panties are to a snail’s clam. His films take my fitful little attitude—desperately sunny with threatening apocalyptic storm fronts (“The waters aren’t rising that much! And we’ll all be able to rush the border when Huckabee disbands Congress and claims America for Jesus, no problem!”)—crumple it into a poopy little wad and flush it straight to hell. I just forced myself to watch Sicko. I’d avoided it long enough. It destroyed me.
But never mind all that.
I noticed something as I watched the film, just a few minutes in, and it was this energetic young fella…
…and he is called Eric Turnbow. You will recognize him as the daring gentleman who made the pilgrimage to London for the express purpose of videotaping himself walking across Abbey Road—a la The Beatles on their famous album cover—but, um, on his hands.
He promptly dislocated his shoulder. Superlative British healthcare ensued. All of this is documented in Mr. Moore’s film.
Eric Turnbow is from Olympia. He is a musician. You might know this.
But, here is what you might don’t know:
Eric Turnbow, famous shoulder-dislocater, is also the brother and/or male sibling of none other than this man…

…who lives in Seattle, and is called Jon Strongbow. Jon has, for as long as anyone can remember, been creating distinctive psychedelic Seattle landscapes like this one…
…which hung at places like Gravity Bar, when there was a Gravity Bar, and still hang at places like Traveler’s on Pine Street and Twice Sold Tales. He is a prolific artist, fascinating local character, and Pike Place Market fixture. You might even know this!
But what you probably might don’t know even more is that both of these brothers—-Turnbow and Strongbow—-are the sons of this Oly-guzzling son-of-a-gun:
…and he was, and is, called Avaton Turnbow. He ran a psychic bookstore in downtown Olympia in the ‘60s, until he decided it was a better idea to found his very own religious cult. He called it “The Fellowship,” and had himself all sorts of jaunty adventures, I’m sure. He sounds like an interesting dinner guest.
Indeed, a source that will eat me alive if I name him (or her) says, “Almost every member of that family is a mad genius. I adore them all.”
Sounds like a fascinating story, doesn’t it? Just, doesn’t it?!

I remember Strongbow from his turns harassing young women at poetry readings. He sang abysmally bad poem songs and thought he was fascinating. When rebuffed, he got nasty. Blech.
Avaton owned a metaphysical book store in Olympia.
He created a religion called “The Fellowship”, which as far as i know, never kidnapped anyone or held it’s members hostage along with their bank accounts. The Fellowship evolved into Cosmic Awareness Communications. They have a website which, for those who may be interested, provides deeper insight into the workings of the Universe.
And may I say how sad it makes me when I read that someone can get written off as a “dipshit” or a ‘hippie” or a “psychic cultist” by someone called “FNARF” who clearly doesn’t know the whole story.

The point made in “Sicko” is that even a foreigner who injured himself by walking on his hands across Abbey Road in London, was treated in a hospital FREE OF CHARGE.
If there’s a “DIPSHIT” anywhere, it’s the US healthcare system, and the way that many of it’s own citizen’s are just one illness away from total bankruptcy.
Babs-Ra, healthcare is an important issue. None of these loons have anything to do with healthcare issue.

I have always hoped that if I were (god forbid) to breed that my son or daughter would grow up to be some kinds of enigmatic figure and/or cult leader.
But to achieve this, the parent must bless their child with a name that has some extra zing. Avaton is about the zingiest! And so it has made it onto my list of names that would surely inspire a future as some kind of evil genius. Its not all cliche like Damien or Anton or Aleister either, and it seems pretty unisex. I LOVE it!

Eric’s brain is not fried on beatlemania, and he used to be quite agile at handwalking. Unfortunately, he had what is known as an ACCIDENT. Did you ever have one of those? Like maybe slipping on ice ?? I’m not ashamed to admit that I’ve actually had an ACCIDENT or two, myself. That does not make me, or anyone else – a “dipshit” .
Strongbow wears all types of hats while WORKING at his daystall. These hats are known as COSTUMES. Ever hear of those?? You know – the clothes that street artists and performers wear while they are working. I’ve seen him wear Safari Hats, Joker’s hats, large straw hats and other interesting head gear, while at work. That does not make him a ‘hippie”. Not that there is any negative connotation to the word Hippie – what does irritate, is your propensity for labeling people.
By the way – when you were photographed wrapped up some bizarre gold suit near a body of water…what did everyone label “YOU”?
Hey Adrian, great job. But guess what… there are THREE MORE Turnbow siblings. (Myself included — mad as a jester’s hatter and presently doing a tour at Harvard Divinity School.)
My older brother is a techie wiz and cunning linguist likened to David Letterman, my younger brother a Gatesesque entrepreneur and land baron, and my sister is a musical savant, formerly of the the DC band The Despondant Astronauts. And besides his handwalking expertise, Eric is also a successful entrepreneur, chess master, and musical wunderkind himself.
So pitch a tent baby — cuz that’s just the first generation!

This is one of the best Slog posts ever! I totally hope the Stranger pulls together a story on this family for the print edition. They’re totally fascinating.
And I’m in agreement with most of the other Slogistas that AVATON rocks as a name. My sis named her first child Pandora. The second is Eve. If she decides to have another, I’m totally lobbying for Avaton as the next name.
Oh, this is so interesting! I am the last of the Turnbows and yes, we are an eccentric bunch. How cool to see a slog about our fam.
Great to hear from my sister Katherine too who is going to school at Harvard and getting smarter than ever.
Eric can still walk on his hands, Strongbow is one of my favorite humans ever, and my brothers Marc and Tom are heros to me. Avaton is a wonderful human as is his wife Vikki. Then of course there is the matriarch of the family, our beloved Jean. She’s pixilated.
I am flattered about the article. Thank You! I do wear many hats including Karaoke Pioneer, High Tech DJ, Business Owner, Songwriter, Guitar, Bass, and Piano Player, and Proud Home Owner among others. I DO NOT, however resemble in way shape or form a “Dipshit”, thank you very much! That is just not who I am, and I frankly find it insulting. Keep blogging though! It is the American Way! I may be offended, but certainly not startled. I also enjoy a good laugh, even if it is at my own expense!
My two trips to England had a Genesis washed in my love of music, and the Super group “The Beatles” in particular. I was able to spend 10 days in Liverpool and tour all the houses they young Fab lived in back in the 50′s and early 60′s. It was amazing. You need to see “Penny Lane”, a real street in Liverpool that Paul actually wrote the song from looking out the window of his car. It is fascinating. It all comes alive to you. I strive to write music that intense and simple at the same time. John and Paul were simply the Mozart’s of our generation. Their work will be cherished for millions of years!
I also spent several weeks, over two separate trips in 1992 and again in 1997 in London England. To go to “Abby Road” and sniff the Beatle air there, and see Paul’s house that he still owns today on Cavendish Avenue is stunning. It is inspirational! I was a on a mission of truth that was beautiful!
I never intended to fall or get injured on my pilgrimage to London in 1997. I simply wanted a photo op that was unusual and different. All the tourists were walking in stride to recreate that famous Abbey road cover. I had to do it, as Michael Moore put so eloquently, “My own Way!”. It had to be different! It had to be, well, original. Unfortunately I lost my balance and ended up in the hospital. Lucky for me they did have socialized medicine. I assure a trip like that to a state side hospital would have cost Thousands of dollars, and that is simply a fact. I had my visa and was ready to pay for the stay, but they waved it and gave me my meds for about $7 or something. Amazing! Looking back on it I am glad it happened now! I was in the spirit of it all, and documenting it as went, thank God! I was honoured to be included in the movie “Sicko” which is a brilliant piece of work. I am hoping that it snags the coveted Academy award this year. It deserves too!
So there you have it! The rest of my family are all cool people with individual talents and personalities. We are honored to be included in your discussions, and proud to be called “Turnbow’s”! Thanks You!
Turnbows are not Normal; thank god! Our planet desperately needs more people like them. The harsh negative judgments thrown around here by one of the writers is quite revealing. Judging someone simply by what kind of hat the person is wearing? Why would you write off someone because of his hat? Speaking of sanity, how sane is that? How can someone feel that threatened by a person wearing a jester’s hat? This kind of fear of others because they are “different” is exactly the kind of fear and insecurity that led this country to do an immoral pre-emptive strike in Iraq and then ignore all of the death, destruction, and hell we have created.
If someone thinks it’s silly or obsessive to go to England to revel in one’s love of the Beatles, then well and good, but just how is this bad or damaging to the rest of us? As far as I’m concerned, I’d much rather a person was obsessed with the Beatles to the point of making a pilgrimage to England than a lot of other obsessions I can think of – like, for instance, those folks who are obsessed with, say, guns – and where that obsession leads them.
The basic purpose of life is to be of use to others and to leave this place a better place than we found it for our having been here. Mission accomplished for the Turnbow Tribe! They all qualify based on contributions already made for making this planet a better (and more fun) place to live.
Having known this family for over 50 years, I can attest to what a special family it is. Not even counting the family’s art and music contributions to our culture, all of the Turnbows have made this a better place for us all. I am especially grateful for Jean Turnbow’s kindnesses to me and my family, which I hold deep in my heart. One of my fondest memories of life so far is a day 27 ½ years ago when I went for a walk on Fish Trap Loop with Jon, his guitar, and three or four other Turnbows and friends. The beauty of that day, the music, the sense of connection I felt with these wonderful people on this wonderful day was just a perfect moment that has enriched my life forever. I always will remember the beauty and perfection of that moment.
oh yes, I know the Turnbows. and I love them dearly. In fact, they are my only source of entertainment in my otherwise boring and seemingly “normal” life. If you don’t have a Turnbow in your life, then you HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU’RE MISSING!

Frederick Riley Jan 20 1947 – Jan 18 2007 By Frank Davies
I’d like to reflect on the passing of a friend and musical icon, Rick Riley. I first met Rick on the Olympia waterfront at his ‘Virtuoso Studios’ about a decade and a half ago, …classic guitar in one hand and a piece by Bach in the other determined to learn from a local master. After ‘auditioning’ for him, he began teaching me, as he taught all of his students, …from the beginning. He taught his students more than just classic guitar performance: He taught music. His students learned to sight read and to write music, but they also learned how to perform as a professional would, in the practical sense of being a working musician. Rick embodied the term as he performed music by classical composers such as Villa Lobos, Bach, Sor, Vivaldi, or Mozart, yet also performed in Johnny Lewis’s jazz band. Eric Turnbow (E. T.’s Cosmic Karaoke owner) said of him… “I best remember Rick from playing in Variety bands with him in the early eighties. He used to perform and tutor our ‘Raging River Band’ back in 1983 on how to sing 4 part harmony, stage presence, music theory, and the business of music.” A musician all of his adult life, Rick took private lessons with notable instructors at the Peabody Conservatory of Music starting at the age of fifteen, including: Richard Phillips (Peobody graduate and student of Sophecles Papas and Andre’ Segovia), Michael Lawrence (Peabody graduate and student of Aaron Shearer) and Robert Luse (composer and classic guitarist.) In the time I knew him he continued to study his craft, having recently returned to Peabody to take a master class from Manuel Barrueco (perhaps the best performer of Bach on the classic guitar in the world.) Rick also performed as a one man band on the synth and his singing repertoire’ included everything from the Beatles to ZZ Top. On occasion Rick would take a break from his world of music to go fly fishing, but normally he would be found in his studio helping others to someday reach his awesome status as a working musician. One can only expect he is now competing for ‘first chair’ guitarist in that band up in the sky.

The passing of Rick Riley on January 18th, 2007 was a tragic day indeed for all Music Lovers. Rick left this world just 2 days more to go before His 60th Birthday! The cancer finally got Him and it is Our loss indeed.
I first met Rick in 1983 where He was working as a Guitar teacher and Salesman at “Simmons Music Company” in Tumwater Washington. It did not take long before He invited me to join his Country Rock Variety named “Lynn and The Night Hawks”, which after I joined we renamed “The Raging River” Band”. We worked steady, and often. Many Animal clubs such as The Eagles, VFW, or Moose Lodges. We did “Buy Back” dates at “Lake Cushman Resort”, and “The Cottage Cafe” in Shelton during this time in the early Eighties. Rick Mentored Me on “Live Performance” and we rehearsed constantly at His “Woodshed Studio” out on black Lake. It was here that I learned Vocal Harmony, and worked hard on My Bass Guitar chops.

Rick was an accomplished classical Guitar player, as well a great Jazz Guitar player. In fact He worked in The Johnny Lewis Band as the Lead Guitarist and Vocalist for many Many Years. It was always a pleasure of mine to go and listen to them play every year in Down town Olympia at Our Annual Lakefair Festival. This was an accomplished band, and Rick was a very important element in its success.

A few years after His His death I learned that Rick had long lost Daughter named Jess Mena. She hardly ever got a chance to meet Her Dad, and had searched the internet for hours and hours looking for some sign of Him. Eventually she found Me on Facebook, and I had her over to the house to reflect on the awesome talent or Her Father Rick. She played a mean guitar! Those genes really passed over to Her! I shot some videos of Her, and got to spend some quality time showing some videos of Her Dad, and giving Her a few pictures and keepsakes.It was great meeting and I enjoyed meeting Her very much. Here is some of our correspondence!
thanks Eric, I’m blown away as I am a singer songwriter myself and the reason I have been searching for rick Is because He is my biological father. MY Mom declined to have him present during my life and when I decided to look she finally agreed to help me. I grew up in Centralia Washington so close to him ll those years and moved to New York in 2003. In New York I picked up guitar and have always sang. Now my husband and I are both singer-song writers. Not a day goes by when I wish I had the chance to meet him. If you happen to know his family at all I would like to approach them. thanks for your information. ll the best, jess
ps. here is some info on me I realize it sounds nutty the whole thing. i was born in 84 in Aberdeen Washington. My Mom met rick while he was playing in a band with My uncle “chuck Crothers” the band was called Lynn and the nighthawks, Rick saw me a few times when i was too young to remember i just have snippets. He told my Mom he wanted to make it work in 87 at which point my Mom declined to have him in our lives and asked him not to contact us. She said it was because he was a little to into party life and she didn’t want her two children ( my late older brother and I) to be around that kind of life. she saved few things of his for me, a note he wrote her, a news clipping of him with the band and a business card of his. she always told me if he had wanted to look he would have. I’m fine with it all, sad that I found him 3 years too late, proud of what he was . I do wonder where a lot of my music love came from. anyway, thanks again, I hope this hasn’t been too nutty for you, jess

Ever wonder what Rick could be up to today? Well by My best guess, I would have to assume that He is in The Spiritual world above jamming in a Trio with Segovia and Bach!

Lenny Kravitz played first. He had his usual sexy female drummer and the band rocked with plenty of hits. Their amps were twice the size of Aerosmith, but did not come close to matching the sound. Lenny played about 1 hour and fifteen minutes, Some of the highlights were “American Woman”, “Are you going to go my way”, “Fly away”, and “Let love rules”. He was pretty good. Better than I expected actually. His stage props were laid back compared to the head-liner. He did not blow away, or steal any thunder from our boys from Boston, but seemed extremely convincing.
Aerosmith took the stage at 10pm. They rocked solid for about an hour and 45 minutes. Steven Tyler had his trademark scarf’s wrapped around his mike stand, with some gems and glitter on the bottom of the bass. They opened with a Beatles song “Helter Skelter”. There was only 5 days left on this leg of the tour, so they rocked hard and had rehearsed well. The light show was wicked, They played most the songs you expect. “Walk this way” was like second, and “Sweet Emotion”, “Dream On”, “Back in the saddle”, “Toys in the attic”, “Train Kept a rollin”, “Baby Please don’t go”, “no more no more” which they mentioned was recorded in 1975 for the “Toys in the attic” album, which came out 31 years ago when I was in the 8th grade. I find that mind boggling in itself.
The band played arenas in major North American markets, from October 30, 2005 to March 2, 2006. Lenny Kravitz opened.
